For the purposes of this site, speculative fiction is defined as “a group of fiction genres that speculate about worlds that are unlike the real world in various important ways.” (Source: Wikipedia) As such submissions should fall in one or more of the following genres: science fiction, fantasy, supernatural fiction, alternate history, or magic realism. Horror and dark fiction are also accepted but preference is given to stories that contain some element of science fiction, fantasy, magic, or the supernatural.
Submissions to Flashes of Speculation should be no longer than 1000 words and should include a word count. Authors should also include a brief one- or two-sentence biography with prior works and a link to their website or blog. Authors retain all rights to their works. In order to avoid copyright violations, please do not submit works that have been published elsewhere; original work only. We reserve the right to reject any story that is deemed inappropriate or does not fall inside the speculative fiction genre.
There are now two ways to submit your work:
Note to Contributors: Flashes of Speculation is a no-pay fiction site. We have no income, and therefore no budget with which to pay for story contributions. Flashes of Speculation exists simply as a convenient waypoint for speculative fiction writers to share their short-short works with others who love the genre, and the object is to make flash fiction as easily accessible to everyone as possible. We do it “for the love,” so to speak. Our pen needs a voice, and Flashes of Speculation aims to provide a means for that voice.
