Fish Stories - Charles Richard Laing

After standing waist deep in the freezing water for hours, the three fishermen seriously needed something to get the blood flowing again.

After standing waist deep in the freezing water for hours, the three fishermen seriously needed something to get the blood flowing again. The bartender had three shots waiting for them before they reached the bar.

Without speaking the three men drained their glasses. They set them back down. Like magic they were refilled.

“How was the fishing, boys,” Kelly asked, setting down the bottle but keeping it within arm’s length.

“The water was crystal clear,” Old Halleran said. I was using my favorite fly. You know the one. The furnace spider. I cast it out and just let it float there for a moment. Then I-.”

Kelly leaned in and waited for the rest of the story but that seemed to be all there was to it.

“I hooked one,” Jenson said. “Boy, did it fight. I was reeling it in when- Something happened.”

Kelly sighed and went back to polishing a glass. He didn’t know why he even bothered to ask. Living on the banks of the River Lethe, he heard the worst fish stories.

Charles Richard Laing has had over 200 stories published since 1989. He knows why he’s not rich. He’s not sure why he’s not famous.
